Mr. Coombs

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he has any plans to introduce proposals for the control of flavours and flavouring agents in food; and if he will make a statement.

Discussions are under way in Brussels on a proposal for a council directive that would establish the framework for future controls within the Community over all types of flavourings used in food.

Mr. Coombs

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he has any plans to implement any of the recommendations of the Food Standards Committee's second report on food labelling; and if he will make a statement.

The recommendations of the Food Standards Committee's second report on food labelling were taken fully into account in drawing up the proposals for the Food Labelling Regulations 1980 and the Food Labelling Regulations 1984 which superseded them.

The Meat Products and Spreadable Fish Products Regulations 1984 which come fully into force on 1 July 1986 take into account the recommendations of the 1980 Food Standards Committee report on meat products.

The recommendations in the Food Standards Committee report on water in food relating to labelling and meat products were fully taken into account during preparation of the Food Labelling Regulations 1980 (now superseded by 1984 regulations) and the Meat Products and Spreadable Fish Products Regulations 1984. The recommendations relating to fish products are among the issues currently being examined by the Food Advisory Committee in its review of coated fish products.
