HC Deb 18 February 1986 vol 92 c142W
45. Mr. Madden

asked the Paymaster General how many people are now employed in the United Kingdom textile and clothing industries.

Mr. Lang

In September 1985 (the latest date for which figures are available) there were 464,000 people employed in the textiles (including man-made fibres;) and clothing industries in Great Britain.

Figures for the United Kingdom are not available.

72. Mr. Straw

asked the Paymaster General how many people now registered as unemployed were last employed in the textile arid clothing industries.

Mr. Lang

Information on the previous occupations of the unemployed has not been available from the monthly count since October 1982. The results of the 1984 labour force survey indicate that in Great Britain in the second quarter of 1984 there were 69,000 people without a job and looking for work who had last been employed in the textile, footwear and clothing industries in the past three years.
