HC Deb 18 February 1986 vol 92 c144W
58. Mr. Clay

asked the Paymaster General what steps the Government plan to take to alleviate the unemployment situation in Sunderland.

Mr. Lang

The creation of jobs in Sunderland will depend primarily on the attractiveness of the area to potential investors and the competitiveness of local industry. There is already an extensive range of Government assistance to attract new investments and new jobs to the area. In addition the area benefits from our wide range of employment and training measures, and new initiatives to help the long-term unemployed and job creation in the small firms and tourism sectors.
