§ Mr. Wattsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent representations have been made to the Soviet Government about their use of torture against political prisoners in the Ukraine.
§ Mr. RentonWe have repeatedly made clear our concern at the treatment of many individuals throughout the Soviet Union who are imprisoned or otherwise detained because of their political or other beliefs. My right hon. and learned Friend has regularly raised such issues with his opposite numbers in the Soviet Union. We shall continue to press the Soviet Union to honour its international commitments on human rights under the universal declaration of human rights, the international covenant on civil political rights and the Helsinki final act.
