§ Mr. Holtasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many universities in the United Kingdom offer Japanese and how many Russian; and how many students are studying one or other, or both.
§ Mr. WaldenThere are 28 universities in the United Kingdom which are offering degree courses in October 1986 in Russian language and studies and four which offer Japanese. In 1984, the latest year for which student numbers are available, there were 530 full-time undergraduates studying Russian language and studies. The numbers studying Japanese are not collected separately but are included within a group of 546 studying Oriental, Asian and African languages and/or studies.
