§ Q34. Mr. Footasked the Prime Minister if she will set up an inquiry into health and safety in the United Kingdom's nuclear weapons industry.
§ The Prime MinisterNo. Nuclear weapons development and production facilities are subject to health and safety standards which are at least as rigorous as those applied to any similar industry. Achievement of these standards is confirmed by regular monitoring and by independent inspection by the appropriate regulatory and environmental authorities. While I am aware that certain suggestions have been made in regard to health and safety in this area, I have seen no soundly based scientific evidence to support such views.
