asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many clearance certificates were (a) granted and (b) taken out in 1985; and how these figures compared with each of the previous five years.

The number of entry clearances to the United Kingdom (including those for temporary purposes) issued worldwide was 641,000 in 1980, 605,000 in 1981, 545,000 in 1982, 577,000 in 1983, and 602,000 in 1984.
