HC Deb 04 February 1986 vol 91 c138W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if any persons in receipt of social security benefits and currently having mortgage interest paid by his Department, in whole or in part, will lose any part of such payment under his proposed social security changes.

Mr. Newton

As paragraph 3.41 of the White Paper "Reform of Social Security, Programme for Action" (Cmnd. 9691) makes clear, the Government are continuing to discuss with the building societies and other major lenders what changes might be appropriate, including the possibility of a limit on the proportion of mortgage interest which would be met during an initial period in receipt of benefit. Any firm proposals will be announced in due course.
