HC Deb 04 February 1986 vol 91 c113W
50. Mr. Robert Atkins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he has any plans to seek to modify the role and powers of boards of governors of state schools; and if he will make a statement.

51. Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has any plans to extend parental advice and accountability in education.

Mr. Dunn

As announced in the Gracious Speech, a Bill will be introduced this Session to reform the composition of school governing bodies and to clarify their functions. The Government's policies in these matters are set out in chapter 9 of the White Paper "Better Schools" (Cmnd. 9469). In particular, the proposals provide for parents to be more involved in the running of their children's schools: the parental voice will be strengthened on the governing body; and that body will be required to account annually to all parents with a report and meeting.
