HC Deb 04 February 1986 vol 91 c105W
11. Mr. Loyden

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the number of new build schools, primary-infants, in the 1985–86 programme.

Mr. Dunn

The allocations of prescribed capital expenditure by local education authorities which are determined annually by my right hon. Friend are not announced in terms of individual school building projects. The need to build new schools to cope with local population growth is taken into account but local education authorities are free to use their allocations as they wish. The allocations made for capital expenditure by governors of aided and special agreement schools are project-based and in 1985–86 included five new primary schools.

The Department's records show that to date in the current financial year particulars in respect of major building projects for the provision of 51 new primary schools have been approved by my right hon. Friend.
