HC Deb 03 February 1986 vol 91 c34W
Sir Peter Emery

asked the Paymaster General what action he is taking to alter the distribution of Government funds devoted to the promotion of tourism; if he will increase the funds allocated to the south-west; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

Discussions are currently taking place with the British Tourist Authority and the English Tourist Board to decide how the substantial increase in the boards' financial provision for next year will be divided between them and section 4 and how it will be spent. It is our intention to ensure that a substantial part of the money will benefit areas of the country which could attract more tourists and where unemployment is high. We have asked the boards to place particular emphasis on improving job opportunities in tourism and on encouraging greater dispersal of visitors. The needs of the regions including the south-west will be taken fully into account in the preparation and consideration of the boards' budget proposals.
