§ Mr. Lordasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make it his policy to seek the formation of a professional, self-regulating body of teachers, along the same lines as the General Medical Council for doctors; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Chris PattenMy right hon. Friend has been asked from time to time about his views on the case for a general teaching council, or similar self-regulating body for the profession. He has replied that he would need to be convinced that such proposals commanded wide support and safeguarded the interests of producers and consumers alike, before the Government could consider whether to support the establishment of such a body. That remains the Government's view.
