HC Deb 03 February 1986 vol 91 c58W
Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what research is being carried out at Porton Down on exposure of animals to cyanide and hydrogen gases; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lee

No research is being carried out at the chemical defence establishment, Porton Down, involving the exposure of animals to cyanide and hydrogen as gases. The chemical defence programme is concerned with establishing the toxicity of potential chemical agents which might be used against United Kingdom forces and the efficiency and safety of defensive measures. In this context experiments have been undertaken to improve understanding of the toxicology of cyanide poisoning and with a view to improving treatment.
