HC Deb 03 February 1986 vol 91 c22W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will institute a survey into the use of Plaschem boards in the construction of council house dwellings.

Sir George Young

No. I am not aware of any need for the Department to institute such a survey.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations he has received concerning the use of Plaschem boards in the building industry; and if he will make a statement.

Sir George Young

A number of representations were received prior to 1977 when the fire research station published a report on its investigations of house fires involving Plaschem ceilings. This concluded that the replacement or underdrawing of plastic ceilings would not lead to greater safety overall. Since that date the Department has received one representation in 1984.

I have seen the hon. Member's letter of 22 January 1986 to the Secretary of State, and I will be replying to the representations shortly.
