HC Deb 03 February 1986 vol 91 cc62-3W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what practical steps have been taken recently by Her Majesty's Government to enhance nuclear disarmament and to prevent further proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Mr. Renton

We attach the highest priority to a successful outcome to the US/Soviet talks at Geneva. We support the US negotiating positions and continue to play an active part in the Alliance consultations which contribute to their formulation. We now want to see serious negotiations to achieve the agreed objectives for Geneva.

Meanwhile, as a further contribution to preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons, we have recently undertaken a new round of diplomatic action to persuade states which are not parties to the non-proliferation treaty to adhere to it. This campaign has been co-ordinated with one conducted by the Soviet Union.
