HC Deb 03 February 1986 vol 91 c72W
Mr. Bell

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what steps are being taken to avoid closures of high technology firms in Northern Ireland like the shutdown of the American Monitor Corporation.

Dr. Boyson

The Industrial Development Board attaches high priority to promoting long-term employment in viable businesses. Where a company in difficulty has a prospect of viability with assistance, the IDB will consider making financial assistance available. The IDB is also prepared to assist companies seeking to secure their business through the introduction of new products or processes. In the case of American Monitor International it is unfortunate that despite the financial assistance provided the company has decided to cease trading; this was precipitated by the major shareholder, American Monitor Corporation of Indianapolis, filing for "Chapter 11" under United States bankruptcy laws.
