HC Deb 03 February 1986 vol 91 c85W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services in which regions of the United Kingdom the six haemophiliac counselling centres to which £270,000 has been devoted by his Department for tackling the spread of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome virus will be located; and what factors he took into account when deciding that £270,000 would be a suitable sum of money to allocate for this purpose.

Mr. Hayhoe

The £270,000 has been allocated equally between the regional health authorities responsible for the six existing reference centres which between them treat haemophiliac patients and provide guidance and support to haemophilia treatment centres throughout England.

The regions concerned are Northern, Oxford, Trent, North Western, North-East Thames and South-East Thames.

The allocation is intended to allow extra staff to be employed in the centres on counselling. They will advise on the implications of positive HTLV III antibody tests for haemophiliacs and their families.
