asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many (a) secondary and (b) primary schools in England offer Japanese as a subject;

(2) how many schools in England offer French on the curriculum;

(3) how many schools in England teach Russian.

Information is not available centrally on the extent of teaching of Japanese. The 1984 sample survey of secondary school staffing, carried out by this Department, gives information on pupils studying French and Russian in maintained secondary schools in England. Estimates for year groups one to five are as follows. No information on language teaching is available centrally for primary schools.
