HC Deb 03 February 1986 vol 91 c46W
Mr. Watts

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what research has been undertaken by or for his Department into the efficacy of rear-facing child safety seats for use in cars; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

A study in 1984 undertaken for the Department by vehicle safety consultants obtained information about accident experience in other countries and injury criteria relating to rear facing infant carriers. This information was drawn upon in the preparation of British standard, BSAU 202.

Restraints approved to the standard, which is recognised in our regulations, provide a safe and convenient method of transporting babies, whether travelling in the back or front of cars.
