§ Mr. BrookeThe revenue raised from the general betting duty in 1984–85 was as follows:
£ thousand Off-course 274,596 On-course* 18,451 * Includes totalisators
I regret that it is not possible to identify separately the revenue from horse and greyhound racing.
§ Mr. Greenwayasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the current annual revenue from taxes on (a) on-course and (b) off-course betting; what is the cost of collecting these taxes; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BrookeDetails of the revenue raised in 1984–85 were given in my reply earlier today to the hon. Member for Wallsend (Mr. Garrett).
Precise figures of costs relating to individual duties are not available but the cost of administering the betting and gaming duties as a whole in 1984–85 amounted to £6.4 million, or approximately 1 per cent. of the revenue raised.
