HC Deb 19 December 1986 vol 107 cc759-60W
Mr. Rhodes James

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information he has about the Afghan refugee problem in Pakistan.

Mrs. Chalker

My right hon. and learned Friend and my Friend the Minister for Overseas Development have visited Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan this year. They have seen the extent of the problems caused by the largest refugee community in the world. We admire the generosity of the Pakistan Government. We have ourselves provided about £40 million in assistance to these refugees since 1980.

Further information is available on the question of Afghan refugees in Pakistan from a variety of international organisations, particularly the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
