HC Deb 17 December 1986 vol 107 cc543-4W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will report on the recent visit to Uganda by the Minister of State, the hon. Member for Wallasey (Mrs. Chalker); what is the current situation concerning the outstanding claims for compensation by Ugandan and Commonwealth refugees; and if he will give details of representations made by Her Majesty's Government.

Mrs. Chalker

I was warmly received by the Ugandan Government during my visit on 5 and 6 December and had substantive talks with President Museveni and other Ugandan Ministers and officials about ways in which we might further assist the Ugandan Government to restore peace and prosperity.

I raised for the third time this year the question of outstanding claims for compensation with President Museveni. The President has undertaken to look into the matter, particularly the process by which such claims are examined and verified by the Ugandan authorities.
