HC Deb 17 December 1986 vol 107 c535W
Mr. Nicholls

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he has decided to amend the criteria governing the erection of safety fencing in the central reserves of dual carriageway roads.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Yes. In future safety fencing will be provided on all dual carriageway trunk roads where it can be shown that this is justified by the traffic using the road. It will be provided both as part of new road schemes and in the course of renewing existing roads.

In addition, there will be a programme to provide fencing on other lengths of existing trunk roads. The net effect will be that most roads with dual carriageways will have such fencing. All existing safety fencing will be inspected and repaired as part of normal maintenance work.
