HC Deb 16 December 1986 vol 107 cc506-7W
Mr. David Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many road accidents and road injuries in Scotland each year are attributable to the effects of alcohol.

Mr. Ancram

It is not possible to estimate the total number of injury road accidents attributable to the effects of alcohol since comprehensive information is not held centrally on the breath or blood alcohol levels of those involved. However, the numbers of accidents in which at least one of the drivers or riders involved is known to have been over the legal limit, and the numbers of casualties, were as follows:

1985 1 1986
Accidents 1,205 516
Casualties 1,791 764
1 January to June (provisional).
