HC Deb 16 December 1986 vol 107 cc479-80W
Mr. Greenway

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many men convicted of rape and subsequently released from prison have been reconvicted of the same offence in each year since 1975; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

The only information readily available which relates to a sample of adult males discharged from prison department establishments in 1981 is for those discharged from a sentence for any sexual offence. About 3 per cent. of those so discharged were convicted of another sexual offence within two years. Results of this study were published in tables 8(h) and 8(i) of "Prison Statistics England and Wales 1984" (Cmnd. 9622).
