Mr. Alex Carlisleasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any proposals for setting up AIDS treatment units in (a) Brixton prison or (b) elsewhere within the prison system: and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. MellorThe Prison Department's contingency plans for AIDS include the provision of special care facilities in selected strategically situated establishments in case of need for inmates who have developed the full disease but whose medical management does not for the time being call for the specialist treatment facilities of the National Health Service. As an interim measure, some accommodation has already been set aside at Brixton prison and Risley remand centre, and similar measures at other establishments are being explored. The possibility of setting up a permanent, purpose-designed care unit of 12 beds at Brixton for patients with AIDS and other infective conditions is being considered.
