§ 28. Mr. Duffyasked the Paymaster General how many people are employed in manufacturing industries in the Sheffield travel-to-work area; and how many were employed in manufacturing in the same area in June 1979.
§ Mr. LeeEmployment statistics for local areas are available only for those dates when censuses of employment are taken. The latest available figures from the 1981 census of employment showed that 90,000 employees were employed in manufacturing industries in the Sheffield travel-to-work area compared with 123,000516W in 1978 when the previous census was taken. As results of the 1978 census are not available for the new ward-based travel-to-work areas, the figures relate to the area as defined before the 1984 review.
More up-to-date employment estimates for travel-to-work areas, relating to September 1985, will become available early in the new year. Between censuses, employment statistics are based on small-scale sample inquiries which cannot produce reliable results for areas smaller than regions.
§ 74. Mrs. Goldingasked the Paymaster General how many people are presently employed in manufacturing industry; and what were the comparable figures in 1979.
§ Mr. LeeIn September 1986, there were 5,554,000 employees in employment and self-employed people in manufacturing industries in Great Britain. In September 1979 the figure was 7,242,000.
