88. Mr. James Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the level of unemployment in Scotland at the latest available date; and what the figures were for June 1979.

Mr. Lang

On 9 October 1986, the latest date for which information is available, the number of unemployed claimants in Scotland was 359,236. In June 1979 the corresponding figure was 166,986. The figures are not comparable due to the various changes which have taken place in the compilation of the statistics.

89. Mr. Ron Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many young people under the age of 25 years are currently unemployed in Lothian region.

On 9 October 1986, the latest date for which information is available, the number of unemployed claimants under the age of 25 years in Lothian region was 17,926. This information is available in the Library.
