HC Deb 16 December 1986 vol 107 c519W
38. Mr. Gerald Bowden

asked the Paymaster General what progress has been made towards the establishment of nationally recognised qualifications for trainees in the hotel and tourism industries.

Mr. Trippier

The Hotel and Catering training board, as the lead industry body, is establishing flexible modular routes for progression and a workplace assessment route to vocational qualifications through the Manpower Services Commission funded "Caterbase" project. It is currently being piloted and will be submitted to the YTS certification board, whose job it is to recommend to MSC qualifications suitable for YTS, in early 1987.

In the area of tourism the Manpower Services Commission is in discussion with a wide range of bodies within the industry to develop nationally recognised qualifications. A formal submission to the YTS certification board for a vocational qualification in retail travel and tour operations will be made in early 1987.
