§ Sir David Priceasked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many cases of drug abuse of amyl nitrite, popularly known as "Poppers", have been reported to the health authorities; and what information his Department has on the medical and social consequences of such abuse.
§ Mr. NewtonInformation on the reported misuse of amyl nitrite, or "Poppers" is not held centrally. I am advised that the direct inhalation of volatile nitrites/ nitrates, including amyl nitrite, can lead to a number of effects such as euphoria and a fall in blood pressure leading to fainting, nausea and vomiting, palpitations, deeper, faster breathing, sensations of numbness and tingling. The effects are transitory and it is not thought that the abuse of these substances would lead to any lasting ill-effects in the majority of cases.
