§ Mr. Kirkwoodasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the police clear-up rate for murder cases for the latest year for which figures are available.
§ Mr. MellorIn cases of homicide it is not possible in the absence of a court decision to distinguish between offences of murder, manslaughter and infanticide. In England and Wales in 1985 the ratio of offences of homicide cleared up to offences of homicide recorded in the same year was 96 per cent. Some offences are recorded and cleared up in different years. Statistics of homicides recorded and cleared up are published annually in chapter 2 of the Cmnd. Paper "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales".
