Mr. George Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if syncrolift equipment for submarines is classified as military equipment under the ban on such material to Libya; and if he will make a statement.

Syncrolift equipment is designed for civilian uses and is not subject to export licensing under the Export of Goods (Control) Order 1985.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what guidance was given to Northern Engineering Industries regarding the export to Libya of submarine syncrolift equipment.

Following a approach from the company, the Department of Trade and Industry confirmed that the syncrolift shiplift was not subject to export licensing under the Export of Goods (Control) Order 1985.
