HC Deb 12 December 1986 vol 107 c259W
Sir Dudley Smith

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer under what circumstances a person who is required to sign the Official Secrets Act can subsequently lose his retirement pension rights.

Mr. Brooke

The general effect of existing legislation, as applied to public service pension schemes, is that public servants are liable to pension forfeiture if they are convicted of treason, of a serious offence (with imprisonment exceeding 10 years) under the Official Secrets Acts, or of an offence in connection with their employment, committed before the benefit becomes payable and subsequently certified by a Minister as eithergravely injurious to the state or liable to lead to a serious loss of confidence in the public services.
