Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the figures for the average monthly loss of Scottish manufacturing jobs in each year since 1974; and if he will provide the average figure for (a) the period 1974 to 1979 and (b) 1979 to the present day.

Figures relating to the loss of manufacturing employment since 1974 are given in the table provided. It shows that the average monthly fall between 1974 and 1979 was 1,300, and between 1979 and 1986 was 2,150. In the period between 1983 and 1986, the average fall was 650 per month.
