HC Deb 08 December 1986 vol 107 c48W
Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) over what period of time his Department has been considering the abolition of the Health Education Council:

(2) what consultation has taken place with the medical profession and other interested groups concerning the abolition of the Health Education Council; what plans exist for further consultation; and whether he will postpone further action until a full consultation process is completed.

Mr. Newton

The role of the council in connection with the public education campaign on AIDS has been under consideration for some months. We think it important that the proposed new special health authority should be in effective operation as soon as possible and my right hon. Friend sees no need in the circumstances to consult with outside bodies before going ahead with the change.
