HC Deb 04 December 1986 vol 106 cc770-1W
Dr. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list in the Official Report the numbers and grades of staff presently employed in the water legislation division of his Department; and if he will give an estimate of the estimated expenditure in 1985–86 and 1986–87 on (a) staff and (b) other costs incurred by his Department in producing the White Paper (Cmnd. 9735) and subsequent preparations for water legislation.

Mr. Ridley

Work on the preparation of the White Paper (Cmnd. 9734) cannot be exactly separated out from other related work, but might amount to about 20 per cent. of the staff cost in 1985–86.

The expenditure of the two DOE divisions, whose main work is preparing the policies and legislation announced in the White Paper, is estimated as follows:

Staff £ Other £
1985–86 156,609 103,561
1986–87 370,000 1,300,000

The staff in the water legislation division number 16 at the present time. They comprise one grade 5, four grade 7, seven executive and four clerical staff.

These figures do not include certain other costs, such as accommodation, which was borne centrally.
