HC Deb 04 December 1986 vol 106 c776W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the average (a) lump sum and (b) annual pension entitlement to which a retiring permanent secretary has been entitled over the past five years; and what has been the highest sum in each category.

Mr. Brooke

Civil Service penions are based on salary at the time of retirement and the length of reckonable service; the lump sum is three times the amount of the annual pension. The information requested is shown in the table. The average pensions and lump sums shown are based on the average reckonable service of those in grades 1 and 1a who retired in the years concerned and the average salary in payment to these grades over the year to 31 March. The maxima are those for a grade 1 with the maximum length of reckonable service of 40 years at age 60.
