HC Deb 04 December 1986 vol 106 cc758-9W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment for what period of time nuclear waste will require to be supervised, given present technology.

Mr. Waldegrave

The Government's regulatory authorities will expect facilities to be designed so that safety is not dependent on long-term supervision, but recognise that near-surface disposal of low level waste may require control of land use for some decades after the repository is closed.

Deep disposal of intermediate-level waste will require supervision only for the period before the repository is closed.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many hostel places per London borough are available for homeless people in each London borough and what are the comparable figures for 1983, 1984 and 1985.

Mr. Tracey

The Department does not collect this information. However, I refer the hon. Member to the series "Homlessness Statistics, Actuals" published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, and to the report "Single Homelessness in London 1986"
