HC Deb 04 December 1986 vol 106 cc790-1W
60. Mr. Chapman

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the United Kingdom system of control of food additives.

Mr. Donald Thompson

The Food Act 1984 and regulations made under it provide a comprehensive system of control over food additives in England and Wales. Similar legislation applies in Scotland and Northern Ireland. This legislation is kept under review.

Independent advice to Ministers on the need for and safety of food additives is provided by the Food Advisory Committee and the Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment. Further details of the United Kingdom's system of control are contained in information sheets in my Department's food facts series. Copies have been placed in the Library.
