HC Deb 04 December 1986 vol 106 c788W
48. Dr. Mark Hughes

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what are the principal results of his period as President of the Council of Agriculture Ministers.

Mr. Jopling

My priority has been to focus the attention of Agriculture Ministers on the urgent need for reform of the common agricultural policy, particularly in the beef and dairy sectors, to which the Council will return next week. A number of specific decisions have been taken, of which the more important are:

  • Continued access for New Zealand butter in 1987 and 1988.
  • Establishment of a vineyard register.
  • Restructuring of vinegrowing in Portugal.
  • Implementation of the agreement with the United States on maize imports.
  • Arrangements for testing meat for residues.
  • Regulations concerning the protection of forests from fire and from atmospheric pollution.
