§ Dr. McDonaldasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many families with children had incomes below the tax threshold; and how many of these were in working families at the latest date for which information is available.
§ Mr. Norman Lamont[pursuant to his reply, 17 November 1986, c. 82]: Information on weekly income in the 1984 family expenditure survey suggests that about 1½ million families with children in the United Kingdom had incomes after personal allowances and mortgage interest relief below the tax threshold. One or both parents were in full time work or self-employed in about a quarter of a million of these families.
