HC Deb 03 December 1986 vol 106 c652W
45. Mr. Jim Spicer

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if Her Majesty's Government have any evidence of Soviet intervention in Central America; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eggar

The presence of Soviet military personnel and massive arms supplies are evidence of Soviet intervention in Nicaragua. Military supplies include substantial numbers of Mil-24 helicopter gunships, tanks, armoured veicles, artillery and SA-7 surface-to-air missiles. This extensive military support for Nicaragua, from a country whose record hardly suggests it is interested in the development of genuine democracy, is of legitimate concern to her neighbours.
