§ Mrs. RumboldThe draft statement of policy, issued by my right hon. Friends in June, called for more pupils to study foreign languages throughout their secondary schooling, and for a wider choice of alternative first and of second foreign languages. The effects of these changes on French would depend upon local decisions about the range and duration of language provision within the available curricular time. Following consultations on the draft, a final version of the policy statement will be issued.
