HC Deb 01 December 1986 vol 106 c535W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish in the Official Report figures showing the proportion of total National Health Service resources devoted to disease prevention and health promotion in the years 1975, 1980 and 1985.

Mrs. Currie

Aspects of disease prevention and health promotion form part of the work of many National Health Service staff, and it would not be practicable to attempt an assessment of the total resources devoted to these matters.

Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of medical research funds contributed by his Department was devoted to prevention of disease and the promotion of health in the last full year to a convenient date.

Mrs. Currie

Much of the research funded directly by the Department is intended to improve health and prevent disease. Research projects aimed specifically at the prevention of disease, the misuse of drugs and alcohol, or the promotion of health account for about 10 per cent. of the Department's programme of centrally funded research in the field of health and personal social services. In addition, research in the prevention of disease and promotion of health is supported by the Health Education Council and other centrally funded bodies sponsored by the Department.
