HC Deb 01 December 1986 vol 106 cc437-8W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Defence when the survey by the National Radiological Board of service men who took part in the nuclear tests was set up; who were the members of the board; what percentage of those considered to be at risk were surveyed; on what criteria it was decided who was at risk; and when the results of the survey are expected.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

The composition of the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) in October 1983 when the study commenced was as follows:

  • Sir Frederick Dainton (Chairman)
  • Mr. A. M. Allen
  • Professor R. J. Berry
  • Dr. J. S. Charlton
  • Professor K. M. Clayton
  • Professor K. T. Evans
  • Professor D. J. Jackson
  • Dr. R. Owen
  • Professor D. W. Pearce
  • Professor T. R. E. Southwood
  • Professor E. M. McGirr
  • Professor R. E. Steiner
  • Dr. J. W. Laws

Details of all United Kingdom personnel whom it is known may have participated including the 5,000 or so for whom radiation dose records are available, have been supplied to the NRPB. It is for the NRPB to decide the criteria for inclusion in the study.

The findings of the study are expected to be available in spring of next year.

Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will take steps to set up a judicial inquiry into the current health of ex-service men who took part in the nuclear tests.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Any further inquiry would not be appropriate whilst the independent study by the National Radiological Protection Board is in train.
