HC Deb 01 December 1986 vol 106 cc524-5W
Dr. David Clark

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if Her Majesty's Government will draw up a national water quality plan for the coastline bordering the North sea; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waldegrave

The control of coastal water quality is for the water authorities (in England and Wales) and for the river purification authorities (in Scotland). They discharge this function having regard to local circumstances, and to Government policy and the U rifted Kingdom's international obligations. It is not necessary to have a formal national plan, although the performances of the individual water authorities and river purification authorities are reviewed regularly by the Government.
