Mr. J. Enoch Powellasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what numbers, respectively, of £1 coins with the thistle reverse in 1984 and the leek reverse in 1985 were put into circulation; and what proportion of the 440,000 coins with flax reverse issued in 1986 have been put into circulation in 1986.
§ Mr. LawsonSixty-nine million £1 coins with the thistle reverse and 178 million £1 coins with the leek reverse have been put into circulation. All 442,000 £1 coins with the flax reverse in 1986 have been put into circulation. The Royal Mint is expecting to issue a further 8.5 million coins bearing the flax plant design in the week commencing 1 December.
