HC Deb 01 December 1986 vol 106 c534W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the cost of training hearing aid therapists and the number trained in the seven years when it was centrally funded; how many regional health authorities are now providing training; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

During the period from 1978 to 1985 when central funding was provided, 64 students completed the course at the City Literary Institute. The cost of training in 1984–85 was around £5,000 for each student hearing therapist. There are 12 students, sponsored by their district health authorities, on the current course.

Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what financial support he proposes to give to the British Society of Hearing Therapists for the year 1987–88.

Mrs. Currie

The Department keeps in touch with the society in regard to the development of this new profession, but it is not our practice to grant aid to professional bodies.
