Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) why it was necessary to include provisions relating to the sale of British sherry for 10 years in the treaty of accession of Spain and Portugal to the EEC; for what reasons Her Majesty's Government agreed to the provisions of article 129 in relation to British sherry; and what discussions he had prior to the negotiations with the British sherry industry;

(2) under which part of article 43 of the treaty establishing the EEC a decision will be made in 1995 on the arrangements for use of the terms British sherry, Irish sherry and Cyprus sherry;

(3) what steps Her Majesty's Government have taken to implement the provisions of the treaty of accession of Spain and Portugal concerning the import or sale of Australian sherry in the United Kingdom.
