Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Paymaster General if he will list for each region the numbers of self-employed, by industrial and occupational category for men and women for the years 1975 to 1985.

The regular quarterly self employment series is classified according to region and industry division, for June of certain years. The available information is presented in tables 1 and 2. The series is not classified by occupation or cross-classified by region and industry.

The labour force survey provides information on a different basis, but allows an analysis by occupation. The available information, relating to years in which the survey has been carried out since 1981, is given in table 3.
